How Do I Put Tops & Bottoms Together?
A friend recently admitted to me she only wears dresses or jumpsuits to meetings because she doesn't understand how to combine tops and bottoms. This is a very common challenge and I wanted to shed some light.
When you are confused about your shape and style personality- it's easy to buy tops and bottoms independent of your natural shape and your “best” outfit formulas. Then you end up with a wide variety of lengths, widths, necklines, sleeve lengths, rises, etc. and combining them is a quadratic equation too difficult to solve.
In reality, your body shape has a few very flattering silhouettes. You have to find the ones that transform you — and then BAM! You literally can repeat those in formal, casual, even athleisure!
To better understand yourself — your style personality, shape, colors, and what outfit formulas are best — we have developed our unique service Style Awakening. Try it and watch your outfit-building transform!
ROUND/APPLE SHAPES
Round shapes look great in tops that bring attention to the neckline and draw the eye away from the midsection. Try a loose sweater untucked like this with a fun button down layered underneath. Straight bottoms keep the silhouette balanced.
PEAR SHAPES
Adding a jacket is a great way to balance a pear shape. It also adds interest! The waist is still defined here, with the jacket open and a contrasting belt. A wide or straight leg pant balances hips.
INVERTED TRIANGLE SHAPES
For an inverted triangle, a sweater or scarf with a v-neck can soften the shoulder line. This flowy, satin pant is drawing attention to the lower half, adding balance.
RECTANGLE SHAPES
If you have a rectangle shape, try playing with a boyfriend cardigan and looser jeans. These elements can help add dimension to a straighter frame.
HOURGLASS SHAPES
If you have an hourglass shape, tuck in your top and keep both top and bottom balanced to allow your natural curves to shine.
