“Nothing in my closet goes together".”

When it comes to styling, I hear this statement a lot… and I GET it.

Between work in / outside of the home, kids' academics / activities / social / emotional, health, meals, vacation planning, volunteering, elderly parents, grooming, and the upkeep of a home- who has time for clothes??!!!  Who has time for the husband, either- that guy also usually gets the shaft.

Here's the thing about working on your wardrobe- it's kind of like exercise.  If you can make a small investment regularly, you will get long-term payoffs.  It also gets easier the more you make it a habit.  It builds and compounds, and then you're getting benefits from it that pervade all the other parts of your life.  But you've gotta do the RIGHT exercises and at the right level for optimal results.  And that's where an expert can help!

A style coach is going to assess where you're at, where you want to be, and how to get you there.  Then they can prescribe small steps to take in order to get you from A to B.  It's not rocket science.  It's not bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!  It's literally taking one step building on another until you feel GREAT everyday.

Hours and hours of a huge style makeover is not effective.  Because that's a point in time.  Your lifestyle may change.  Your occasions may change.  Your size may change.  But if you do a little bit every week or month, you are figuring out what stands the test of time.

Investing small amounts of time in your dream style WILL pay off.  And before you know it, you'll be getting ready in a pinch, walking around confidently and happily, and focusing on the world around you instead of what's on your body!

Here are my personal tips for how to work on your style in SMALL doses:

You buy color, print, statement pieces galore and skimp on basics. Basics include shoes and bags! You NEED the boring pieces to make the interesting ones work. If you have a printed maxi skirt you want to wear, then invest in the neutral sweater, boots, and jacket to go with it! Trust me, those neutral pieces will become the GLUE of your closet.

If you don't understand how to flatter your shape, you buy all lengths, widths, cuts, and weights. Then when you go to combine pieces, you're all over the place- the equation is too complex to figure out. Once you understand your shape and ways to enhance it, you will narrow your scope of buying to a very limited set of styles that WORK TOGETHER. And building looks will be easy- trust me!

There are 8 major style personalities.  When you are unsure what you like, you buy across all 8.  Then you end up with a mishmash of items that don't seem to “fit” together- in the style world, you are clashing different aesthetics together.  Although a little dated, THIS is the best resource I've found on style personalities.  Figure out which one you love and explore it!  Yes, you can be different personalities for different occasions, that's normal!

It doesn't cost a lot- the entire look above is thrifted: jacket, top, pants, and purse.  What it takes is KNOWING what to buy.
